Autumn Term 2017-2018

Beech Class

Year 2

Welcome carers, governors and children to the Beech Class page!

Welcome back to school after what was hopefully a lovely summer break.

I am sure everyone is ready for a fun filled term of learning at The Oaks!

Our passion in the Beech class is to have a love for learning. We are keen to try anything and always there to help ourselves and others succeed.

Delamere Forest Thursday 16th – Friday 17th November (2 days & 1 night stay)

An exciting term ahead as we try and find as much information as possible for the Queen about Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong. We will also be looking at Christianity, in particular the bible as well as the world and it’s seven continents.

In Maths this term we will look at the place value of numbers, addition & subtraction, measurement & money, multiplication and division.

Some topics/questions we will be looking at in class:

How many tens and ones are in a number? How many 100s?

Show me/represent 67 in three different ways…

Adding 2 digit and 1 digit numbers, adding two 2 digit numbers, adding the tens number and the ones numbers, partitioning numbers to add and subtract.

If Mary has 3 groups of 3 sweets and she gives her brother 2 sweets, how many sweets does Mary have left?

Useful websites:

We started off the year making poems about the mysterious things that could be in The Magic Box. Looking ahead we will be writing letters and non-chronological reports.
The children will be very excited when they see they have received a large postcard from Sunny the Meerkat on his return to the Kalahari Desert.

We follow the Letters and Sounds documents and most children will be learning more complex spelling rules related to the Year 2 curriculum.

Useful websites to practise spellings:

We will be looking at the uses of materials and living things this Autumn term.

Music will be taught by Miss McVey on a weekly basis. We will first focus on singing songs from around the world.

We will work with Mrs Tudor once every two weeks for drama that relates to our literacy and topic work.

Homework & Reading

Homework consists of: reading & number facts learning.

Read with your child every night or every other night and you will see the lasting benefits of engrossing them in stories!

Please make sure it is clear whether your child has finished a book in their reading record. We check the reading records at least two times a week.

Remember… your child could be in with a chance of reaching 200 reads and a special treat!

Art and PE lessons are on a Tuesday afternoon, the children need a full PE kit to participate.

Thank you for visiting our class page and please do not hesitate to come in and arrange a meeting if you have any questions.
