Welcome to Sycamore Class

Welcome to Sycamore class page. I hope you have all had a relaxing Easter Break.

In literacy we will continue to use our Talk for Writing  process. We will be reading The Vanishing Rainforest linking to our topic of Brazil. We will change these stories to be set in Sumatra, using knowledge from our Orang Utan project with Chester Zoo. We will also be addressing the issue of deforestation in our stories.

In mathematics, we will be working on geometry before moving on to measurement. We will be learning to use a protractor for the first time to measure and draw angles as well as learn more about the properties of 2D and 3D shapes. These topics will be covered in depth and approached through number questions, word problems as well as more complex problem solving and reasoning contexts. Alongside these topics we will continue to consolidate our basic four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division through our Fast Maths.

In science our topic is materials. In this unit we will explore the different properties of materials and their suitability for products. We will use this knowledge to design and make a guinea pig run. Following our experiments we will present the data we have gathered using charts and graphs.

Our topic for the summer term is Brazil. We will be looking in detail at the Amazon Rainforest including animals and plants that live there. We will also be tackling the topic of deforestation, linking to our Orang Utan project last term. Through our topic we will also develop our mapping skills.

We will continue to have violin lessons this year on a Tuesday morning with Mrs Jones.

During French lessons, Madame Chew will provide the children with the opportunity to continue to practice everyday phrases and conversation.

We will be learning about Christianity and the teachings of Jesus.

P.E is now on a Thursday; please ensure P.E kits are in school, including pumps or trainers. Art will also take place on a Thursday.

Homework must be completed by all children. Homework is now given out on a Thursday and collected in on Tuesday.  Spellings will also be given out on a Thursday and the children will be tested every week. If children would like any support with their homework, they can come and see me at any time during the week or go to homework club.

Children need to bring their reading books and reading diary into school every day. Please encourage your child to read a wide range of texts regularly, don’t forget to write in their reading records to contribute towards their 100 Reads!

Please do not hesitate to come and see me if you have any questions.

Many thanks

Miss Logan
