Summer Term 2017

Welcome to Year 1

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

What a fantastic year we have had so far in Year One! This is our final term and there is still lots of fun, exciting things to do in the Elm class. We begin the year with a class trip and our PE/ART day has changed from Tuesday afternoons to Wednesday afternoons. Reading books will also be changed every Monday, Thursday and Friday this term. Homework is given out on a Thursday and due back in on Tuesday the following week.

This term sees us taking part in the Phonics Screening Check. You will be notified of a date to come in and chat with us about the process. Please do read with your child every night and practise the High Frequency Words in their homework packs to ensure they are the most prepared for the check as they possibly can be. The phonics check begins the week beginning 12th June.

Kind Regards,

Miss Harper

This term we will be continuing our learning around  place value, number and the number system. We will be applying this to the four operations –  addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. As well as this we will be learning about capacity and weight. We will also revisit 3D shape and telling the time.

Talk for Writing

This term we will be going to Chiquitos to be able to write a recount of our event.

We will also be learning and innovating the brilliant story of ‘The Lion Inside Us.’

Science – Seasons and Identifying Materials

This term we will focus on predicting, investigating and answering questions to work scientifically. We will also look at seasonal changes and identifying materials.

History – This term we are looking at transport from now and in the past.

Geography - We are learning about directions and seasonal changes.

Art – This term we will be creating a boat with Mrs Martin (Please remember your child’s art clothes so they can make this wonderful piece!)

French – The children will continue to take weekly French lessons with Madame. Chew.

Homework will be sent out on a Thursday and is due back in the following Tuesday.

We keep a record of who has been returning completed homework to a high standard. These children will be rewarded at the end of the year.

Reading at home

We change home reading books every Monday, Thursday and Friday morning. Please make sure that your child brings in their book with their reading record every day. We always check that the children have been reading regularly at home and we ask that you sign the book. Please use the reading record as a way of communicating with us about your child’s reading.
